Choosing APT Target Fields
* Stay at a Declination between +20 and -70 degrees.
* Stay as south as possible.
* Decide when you want the field to rise, and calculate a rough RA and DEC from that.
Marty's Field Picker
ssh into mcba11
cd /home/duane/sm/
start sm (SuperMongo)
execute start
ctype black (this depends on if your terminal background is white or black. If it is black, don't use this command)
ty 15 -40 7 7 gives you the tycho stars in a 7x7 box centred on 15 -40 (RA and DEC)
hi 5 green highlights all the stars brighter than 5th magnitude in green
bbb 14.8 -39 3 2 puts a box of 3x2 degrees centred on 14.8 -39
* Move fields so they are not in the vicinity of very bright stars (< 5th magnitude)
* Copy and edit the existing script on mcba11 that covers the observing field for the APT
To find the rise and set times of APT fields
* Find the RA of the field, then work out what RA is overhead at midnight (going from the fact that an RA of 0:00:00 is overhead at midnight on Sept 22 and an RA of 12:00:00 is overhead at midnight on March 22).
* The RA of the field will be in the obsMonth07 script on mcba11.
* Adjust for daylight savings, then work out when it rises and sets using roughly +/- 5.5 hours.
* You can be more precise if you calculate the airmass of the field. When the airmass is < 2 we want to observe it.
